What is periodite?

Periodite is a precious variety of the mineral olivine, with a characteristic olive green color. It belongs to the silicate group and has a unique feature – it occurs exclusively in shades of green, which distinguishes it from other gemstones.

Its name probably comes from the French word peridot, but in the past it was also known as chrysolite (meaning “golden stone”) and olivine.

It is one of the few minerals that can form not only in the Earth's crust, but also in meteorites, giving it a cosmic dimension.

Origin and occurrence

Peridot is formed in igneous rocks rich in magnesium and iron. It can form in the Earth's mantle and then be brought to the surface during volcanic eruptions.

The most famous peridot deposits are found in:

  • Egypt (St. John's Island in the Red Sea) – a historical source of peridot, known since ancient times,

  • USA (Arizona, Hawaii) – peridot occurs in basalt volcanic rocks,

  • Pakistan and Afghanistan – high-quality peridots with an intense green color,

  • Burma (Myanmar) – some of the most valuable stones in the world,

  • China and Vietnam – increasing production of gemstones,

  • Meteorites – rare peridots of extraterrestrial origin, e.g. in the Pallas meteorite.

Uses of peridot

1. Jewelry

Peridot has been a valued gemstone for centuries, used in:

  • rings,

  • necklaces,

  • bracelets,

  • earrings,

  • brooches.

In ancient times, it was considered the “gem of the sun” and was often set in gold jewelry.

2. Esotericism and lithotherapy

Peridot is attributed with many spiritual properties, including:

  • purifying the mind and body,

  • strengthening positive energy,

  • protection against negative influences,

  • supporting success and prosperity.

It is also considered the stone of people born in August (the zodiac stone of Leo and Virgo).

3. Collecting

Due to its unique color and origin (e.g., meteorite peridots), this mineral is a valuable specimen in geological collections.

How to distinguish a real peridot?

  • – under a magnifying glass, you can see double contours of the facets.

  • Characteristic olive green color – other green stones (emerald, tourmaline) have a different shade.

  • No color change in different light – peridot retains its green color in both sunlight and artificial light.

  • Inclusions – natural peridots often contain microscopic inclusions in the form of “water lilies” (gas and liquid bubbles).

How to care for peridot?

  • Avoid contact with chemicals – acids and detergents can damage it.

  • Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth – do not use ultrasound or steam.

  • Store separately from harder stones – peridot can scratch easily.

  • Protect from high temperatures – sudden changes can weaken its structure.

Summary

Peridot is an unusual green gemstone with a long history and wide range of uses. It is not only a beautiful decoration in jewelry, but also a mineral with deep symbolism. Its unique color, origin from the Earth's interior (and sometimes even from space) and spiritual meaning make it one of the most fascinating natural stones.
